Overview

Starting from the individual’s workspace to the physical buildings and extending up to wider areas such as campuses, sports stadiums and airports, global enterprises are seeking to reimagine their existing physical infrastructure with an overlay of digital technologies to transform people experience, create a collaborative culture, become more sustainable by conserving resources, and achieve higher operational efficiencies.

These spaces are designed for human interactions with the environment, with each other and the systems around, to realize the required outcome and should have a great experience achieving the outcome.

The hallmark of a successful company is seen in the value it places on employees and its assets. Some of the key trends faced by our clients are as follows:

  • 63% of millennials work for companies that offer personalized work experience and flexible work environment. Millennials will make up 50% of all workers in 2020 and beyond.
  • Buildings will be number 1 consumer of energy by 2025, and up to 50% of energy and water in building are often wasted.
  • Energy usage in data centers are doubling every 5 years, and in US, approximately 900 MMT of greenhouse gases are being generated by commercial buildings alone.

So whether your organization is planning to add a significant number of millennials in your workforce trying to re-imagine their work experiences, or you have large campuses with significant investment in real estate and buildings that need to be made smart and efficient, or would like to achieve your sustainability goals, our Smart Spaces offerings can help you navigate your next.

Our Differentiation

Infosys Smart Buildings and Spaces offering provides application solutions to enterprises, integrate the physical and the digital divide through various digital technology intervention based on the proven Infosys’s SCALE framework. Infosys SCALE (Sustainable, Connected, Affordable, Learning Systems and Experiential) framework brings a structured way of assessing, implementing and operating smart spaces.

Sustainable – Resource Optimization, Resource Re-use and Resource Conversation across spaces – Energy, Water, Waste and Renewable energy source. Resulting in reduced consumption of resources per capita of employee. We measure Building Energy Consumption (KwH/m2-y), percentage of alternate source of energy

Connected – Real-time visibility through connected process, connected people and connected infrastructure. Resulting in increased team collaboration and real-time information, on assets. We measure number of employee touch points. Number of activities that can be done on a mobile app.

Affordable – Value realization framework that is stakeholder experience driven, carbon footprint reduction, reduced cost of operation. Value realization through enhanced employee experience and improved occupancy. We measure reduce employee attrition, complaints and increased productivity and efficiency

Learning Systems – These are about systems that focus on learning based on the usage patterns, stakeholder preferences and incremental cost thresholds. They use AI/ML and other techniques to ensure optimal usage of the resources that can be as personalized delivering the best experience for the stakeholders.

Experiential – The focus of any of the Smart Space solution is on ensuring a great user experience that enable the user to be most-effective possible in the environment they are in. This is about the efficiency and completeness of the task he/she is performing, enjoy the process and collaborate effectively with others in that

Example of Infosys Value Realization:
We deliver this using our human-centric design approach to problem solving leveraging our SCALE framework for rapid solution identification, agile solution implementation and adoption.

At Infosys, we manage over 43+ million sq. ft of campus area with 28+ million sq. ft of office buildings across 16 campuses under continuous monitoring, delivering 50% per capita reduction in energy consumption over a 10-year period. The key solution value levers include 34% reduction in electricity per capita, 59% reduction in water consumption per capita and 38% of energy consumption from renewable resources. The best practices from these solutions and our experiences deliver this outcome are incorporated in the SCALE framework to deliver measurable value to our clients.

Challenges & Solutions

Infosys’ Advisory for Smart Spaces and Roadmap definition offering delivers effective design and experience for various persona, based on the purpose-driven context of the Smart Space. It delivers technology architecture catering to Physical Infrastructure, Networking, Unified Communications, Enterprise applications. This solution helps in phased value realization too.

Infosys developed a common Enterprise Building Management System and a Global Control Tower from which multiple sites can be monitored. A Central Command Center was also established which helped in enterprise level visibility, enhanced security, user management, real-time visibility and reliable operations helping ensure business continuity along with energy savings, data driven actionable insights, predictive maintenance capabilities ensured better maintenance schedule for the identified assets.

Significant savings can be achieved by focusing on assets that consume most energy and ensuring that they are operating efficiently. At Infosys, HVAC chillers, one of the most energy consuming equipment, were retrofitted with sensors to receive critical real-time operational parameters that helped ensuring the chillers were operating in optimal conditions. The diagnostic and predictive models of equipment were built to arrive at a comprehensive solution to optimize chiller performance and maintenance. It resulted into 46% reduction in per-capita energy consumption and timely prediction of failures of key components.
