Infosys enables Mainframe Modernization for a Leading Business and Legal Research Publisher

A leading business and legal research publisher wanted to modernize its IT systems that were too inflexible to support new digital initiatives.

The client’s core application handled important business functionalities like reading vendor files and enriching content. Its database contained court rules and administrative code-related data for US jurisdictions. However, this application consumed around 700 MIPS with higher operational expenses. Rigid monolithic legacy applications meant the client was unable to optimize expenditure.

Key Challenges

  • Higher operational expenses
  • Maintenance issues due to system rigidity
  • Unavailability of the source code repository

The Solution

Rehosting mainframe onto Windows platform

Infosys analyzed the client’s application inventory using proprietary tools and identified loosely coupled components as rehosting candidates. This could help the client to realize savings at early stage. The non-availability of system documents is mitigated by our existing knowledge on the applications and the reports generated from our assessment. As part of the solution, assembler programs were reengineered to PL/I. All the components were migrated to Micro Focus Enterprise Suite on Windows server that provides similar end user experience and eliminate mainframe systems.

Mainframe modernization optimizes operational expenses

  • Migrated mainframe components as-is to Micro Focus Enterprise Suite
  • Reengineered assembler to PL/I to eliminate unsupported languages
  • Created a new testing environment in Windows for faster time to market
  • Recommended an optimization solution such as retiring obsolete components for immediate cost savings
