An Asian nation was struggling with disparate taxation that needed to be unified under the single umbrella of Goods and Services Tax across 38 tax offices. As the only country in the world where traders file taxes on an invoice level, there were significant challenges of high transaction volumes and delayed response times.

Infosys played a pivotal role in executing a large-scale transformation project by creating a platform that unified 38 tax offices from across the country and implementing an award-winning solution for indirect taxation.

Key Challenges

  • Set up a scalable and secure infrastructure that could cater to large volumes of data and provide optimum performance
  • Maintain performance at 50,000 transactions per second with a 2-second response time. This was challenging as nearly 6 million traders filed an average of 400 invoices per month, resulting in 2.4 billion transactions per month
  • Maintain the integrity and security of the nation’s economic data without compromising the robustness of the portal
  • Create a platform that was highly scalable to cater to an ever-increasing base of traders from across the country filing indirect taxes through the system

The Solution

Leveraging Open Source technologies and distributed systems to build a dependable and scalable tax network

  • Infosys leveraged Open Source technologies to reduce vendor dependencies on the critical system
  • We championed distributed computing by incorporating it across all design levels – distributed cache, computing and even distributing the database using sharding
  • The solution ensures data security by anonymizing data ensuring zero data loss and reconstruction of truth
  • Infosys delivered a custom implementation of Kubernetes platform that was fed through an end-to-end DevOps pipeline built using Jenkins, Maven, Docker, and other Open Source technologies. We managed a build-to-deploy workflow for more than 75 microservices across 8 different environments

Platform-based approach for centralized tax administration

  • Platform-based approach – Faceless API engine integrates with ecosystem of service providers
  • Vendor-neutral stack with replicability as a core requirement
  • Open standards-based solution implemented on open source technologies
