Event Overview

Payment fraud (i.e. unauthorized or deceptive use of stolen payment information to obtain money, goods, or services) remains a major challenge for financial institutions. As the use of faster payments has increased and become more mainstream, so have fraud-related problems.

Fraud continues to pose a major threat as over £570 million was stolen in payment fraud in the first half of 2024 (in UK alone). Recent surveys indicate that 18% of Norwegians and 15% of Swedes have experienced financial fraud or identity theft in the past year, affecting approximately 800,000 individuals in Norway and 1.2 million in Sweden. Notably, fraud attempts reached an “all-time high” during the summer months, with a 47% increase compared to the previous year. Total fraud and scam-related losses in Denmark reached Dkr627.4 million ($90 million) in 2023. According to Feature space, financial scams are widespread, affecting 3 in 10 U.S. consumers in the past five years. With new regulations requiring banks to compensate fraud victims, fraud prevention has become a top priority.
