Seneviratne firmly believes that that 5G has come at the right time to accelerate the digitization of all industries, which was not possible before.

Imagine watching a show on a streaming platform without a single second of buffering. Or better still, imagine watching your favorite sport on your mobile device, or stream it on your television, truly live. All this and more are promises made by 5G.

In a candid chat with Randip Sinha, AVP, Network Services at Infosys, Channa Seneviratne, Executive, Network Engineering, Telstra, says 5G has three things working in its favor: That it is very fast, that there can be tens of hundreds of times the connections, as compared to 4G; and that it has low latency, that is, the speed at which a signal goes through the network. “It's a combination of those three attributes that bring to life new use cases which could never have been done on 4G,” he says.

And according to him, with 5G, there is something for everybody – consumers, as well as enterprise.

And, on the enterprise front, low latency helps them to start doing remote control of their environment, which in turn will help them to drive down costs, and improve productivity.

Seneviratne firmly believes that that 5G has come at the right time to accelerate the digitization of all industries, which was not possible before. He also sees 5G being used in combination with AI, and analytics, that are all maturing at the same time.

“And that's going to drive… industry 4.0, the next Industrial Revolution,” he says, suggesting that 5G is there as a very important enabler to take the other two technology areas to the next level.
