A German chemical plant design and operations company wanted an engineering data management (EDM) platform to achieve its goal of becoming an Industry 4.0 enterprise.

Infosys devised a strategy to modernize the EDM platform. We developed a technical and functional concept as well as a prototype for an enterprise EDM platform using tag-based data management.

Key Challenges

  • Lack of single data source across the asset lifecycle resulted in process and operational inefficiency
  • The impact of design changes across systems needed to be traced, so that maintenance systems were updated with changes by the engineering center
  • Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products did not create a digital twin of the chemical plant
  • The data management system of plant operations was obsolete

The Solution

Infosys created an EDM road map and demonstrated EDM concepts through prototypes

Infosys developed a prototype to demonstrate key EDM features and capabilities. The prototype for the enterprise EDM platform used tag-based data management.

Our team undertook a requirements analysis against out-of-the-box (OOTB) features available in SmartPlant Enterprise for Owner Operators (SPO) vs Aveva Engineering. We also devised a data platform strategy for an IoT ecosystem.

Commissioned an as-is process study followed by a to-be process evaluation

  • Undertook surveys, questionnaires, and stakeholder interviews to better understand process and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) and functional locations (FLOC)

Benefits

Cost savings by implementing EDM

Reduced plant shutdown time

Up to 1% improvement in operational efficiency of the plant

Zero disruption in business processes

Improved data quality and accuracy
